1941 год. Жизнь студента физмеха Ленинградского индустриального института круто развернулась за один день, перед самой весенней сессией. Иван Гучков «попал на карандаш» майору Лобанову — начальнику отдела Разведывательного управления Ленинградского военного округа. Несколько месяцев спустя в советское ГРУ поступают сведения, что в США полным ходом идет секретная разработка мощнейшего атомного боеприпаса.
Советская разведка принимает решение завербовать Ивана в Неваду на объект «Х» — завод по производству обогащенного урана. Чтобы кандидатура Гучкова не вызывала подозрений, ему меняют не только имя и внешность, но и биографию. Иван перевоплощается в пропавшего без вести курсанта-морпеха Стенли Либера и теперь, будучи объявлен выжившим, он должен жениться на невесте Либера Шейле. Девушка самоотверженно делит с Иваном все его невзгоды и даже решает отправиться с ним в Неваду. Постепенно Иван забывает о собственной невесте Лике, оставшейся в Советском Союзе, да и неизвестно выжила ли она в блокадном Ленинграде.
Но жизнь разведчика непредсказуема: Шейлу, а затем Ивана арестовывают и депортируют в Советский Союз. Там Гучкову придется пройти все круги ада, прежде чем приступить к поискам тех, кто ему дорог и того, что ему нужно.
Это путешествие нельзя назвать приключенческим, я не убегал от злодеев, не находил золотые кубки и не покорял крутые вершины. Но мне удалось увидеть гораздо большее — правду о быте уникальных народов, искренность и настоящую жизнь, которая отбивалась лучами солнца в глазах всех моих новых знакомых. Я приглашаю вас увидеть восточный мир таким, каким увидел его я. Путешествие в Афганистан и Таджикистан в историях простых людей.
